Garviel Loken, 10th Company Captain of the Luna Wolves

The closest horus heresy has to a main character, Garviel Loken is a Terra born loyalist amongst the Sons of Horus, captain of the 10th company Loken was promoted to a position in the mournival after the battle on sixty three nineteen or “the day I saw Horus slay the emperor”, he was to be the naysmith of the group, a disagreeing voice to make Horus revluate his plans from another perspective. This was all good until the virus bombing on istivaan 3, where Loken was intended to be killed by virus bombs along with all the other loyalists in the legion, naturally this didn’t go to plan and Loken survived, dueling Abbadon and little Horus alongside his brother in arms Tarik Torgaddon, Torgaddon would be slain and Loken left for dead, but after several books of plot contrivance he returns as an agent of malcador, under the name “cerberus”, he would later go on to kill Horus Aximand and the possessed remains of Torgaddon, becoming one of the first grey knights, declining the offer to go fight his father Horus during the siege. Loken embodies the old methods of the Luna wolves as opposed to the ganger culture of the later Sons Of Horus.

In game loken is basically just a slightly better praetor for a couple more points, he comes with a paragon blade and bolt pistol, hatred for traitors (so literally everyone he will be fighting) and the “born survivor” rule, which means first time he would die he rolls a dice, on a 4+ he survives on one wound, great for cinematic moments and recreating his battle with Abbadon.

He’s okay, but struggles with the fact most people do not want to run named charaters, and most sons of horus armies are traitors. He does look sick in a full white army of Luna wolves though.

As you can see, his mini didnt age well, most people if they want to play Loken will convert his miniature from a newer scale Mk4 power armour mini, which the Sons of Horus are not short on.

In terms of novels Loken is everywhere, after reading Horus Rising you can make up your own mind about if thats a good thing or bad thing, A lot of people enjoy his character while a lot of people really don’t, I personally do not like his character and sigh a little whenever I am reading a novel and the author feels obligated for him to turn up for a little while, some authors write him better than others, in particular Dan Abnett makes him much more palatable by making sure he isn’t the only character talking in the scene and actually gives him a reason to be there other than “The day needed saving”
